Panelist Biographies:

Dr. Christopher diCarlo: Professor diCarlo is a Philosopher of Science at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology whose work on human reasoning and cognitive evolution has extended into the physical and social sciences. The majority of diCarlo’s research has drawn on the evolutionary sciences which have given philosophers much to think about in terms of how we understand human nature and how we, as a species, treat each other morally. Professor diCarlo is a past Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, an award-winning educator, and an author who has published many papers on topics from bioethics to cognitive evolution. He has recently completed a book published by McGraw-Hill entitled: How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass: A Practical Guide to Thinking Critically.
El-Farouk Khaki: El-Farouk Khaki is a long time resident and community activist. El-Farouk is a nationally-recognized human rights activist, and immigration and refugee lawyer. El-Farouk has been a champion of equality and human rights and has helped new Canadians from many nations including women victimized by mass rapes in Rwanda and Uganda, survivors of the Bosnian genocide, and victims of domestic violence from various Caribbean countries. His efforts have been publicly recognized by a wide and diverse group of community organizations. In 1993, he founded Salaam, the first queer Muslim group in Canada and second in the world. In 2003, he organized the first female-led, mixed-gender Muslim congregational prayers in Canada for the Salaam/Al-Fateha International Conference, and in 2005, organized the first such prayers anywhere to be held in a mosque.
Homa Arjomand: Homa Arjomand is an Iranian communist political activist, a member of political bureau of Worker Communism Unity Party, and the coordinator of international campaign against the sharia courts in Canada. The campaign against sharia laws came victorious in 2005, and was the reason that Islamic courts (and later other religious courts) were suspended in Ontario. After the victory, Arjomad became well-known especially in Eastern Canada and Ontario media. She also received the award of “Humanist of the Year” from the Humanist Association of Canada. She is also an activist for children's rights.

Lucy Reid: Lucy Reid is the ecumenical (non-denominational) member of the Multi-Faith Resource Team at the University of Guelph. She is an Anglican priest, whose work on campus is sponsored by the Anglican, United and Presbyterian Churches of Canada. She considers herself a liberal Christian who is interested in seeing faith develop in the twenty-first century until it has these hallmarks: relevance, deep spirituality, openness to other faiths, commitment to social justice, and inclusively, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or other distinctions.
